  1. The GIMP: The GNU Image Manipulation Program

  4. This is GIMP version 2.0, a stable release of the GNU Image
  5. Manipulation Program. GIMP 2.0 installs side-by-side with GIMP 1.2 so
  6. there's no need to uninstall GIMP 1.2 (but sooner or later you will
  7. not be using it any longer...).
  8.  
  9. Some features that were present in GIMP 1.2 are not included in this
  10. release. The perl bindings as well as all the perl scripts are not any
  11. longer included in this source tree. They have been moved into its own
  12. module called gimp-perl and there's a pre-release available at
  13. ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/plug-ins/v2.0/perl/.

  15. GAP, a set of plug-ins that used to live in the
  16. Video submenu has also become a separate package and can be downloaded
  17. from ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/plug-ins/v2.0/gap/.

  19. This release does also not contain any user documentation to be used
  20. by the built-in help system. Help files for GIMP 2.0 are being worked
  21. on and you can find snapshots at ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/help/.

  51. We have several mailing lists dedicated to GIMP user and development
  52. discussion.  There is more info at

  57. or "gimp-developer" (without the quotes, of course) depending on the list

  61. Gimp-announce is a low-traffic list with announcements about new
  62. releases of GIMP and plug-ins. Gimp-user is a mailing list dedicated
  63. to user problems, hints and tips, discussion of cool effects, etc.
  64. Gimp-developer is oriented to GIMP core and plug-in developers.  Most
  65. people will only want to be subscribed to gimp-user. If you want to
  66. help develop The GIMP, the gimp-developer mailing list is a good
  67. starting point.

  69. There is also a mailing list dedicated to users of the Win32 port
  70. "gimpwin-users".  To subscribe, send an empty message to

  76. list is hosted on yahoogroups.com; the messages from the list contain

  84. And finally, for the real junkies, there is an IRC channel devoted to
  85. the GIMP. On Byxnet (a private mostly-GIMP network) there is #gimp.

  91. 4. Customizing
  92. ==============

  94. The look of GIMP's interface can be customized like any other GTK app
  95. by editing the ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file or by using "themes" (ready-made
  96. customizations).  For downloadable themes and further details, see
  97. http://gtk.themes.org.  Additionally GIMP reads ~/.gimp-2.0/gtkrc so
  98. you can have settings that only apply to The GIMP.

  100. Included is a set of keybindings similar to those in Adobe Photoshop.
  101. You can find them in the ps-menurc file.  To use them, copy this file
  102. to ~/.gimp-2.0/menurc. You can also manually change the keybindings to
  103. any of your choice by editing ~/.gimp-2.0/menurc.
